Hyperpersonal Communication: The Bajan-Asian Context

In the virtual world, the Bajan is one mode and eight levels away from the Asian. In the real world, he is twelve hours behind and miles away. Despite these, CMC finds its way to bring them together in real time. Joe Walther (1996) suggests that CMC can make two people experience more intimate relationship than they would through FTF. This is possible because of the four factors which Walther identified: (1) selective self-presentation ; (2) overattribution of similarity ; (3) communication on your own time ; and (4) self-fulfilling prophecy (Griffin, 2009). First of all, selective self-presentation is evident in their CMC. Naturally, they are forming impression about each other so they would normally choose which information about themselves they will reveal to each other. When the Bajan said, " I was a gangster, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear that, " it means that he was already aware that he must choose carefully which information about himself shoul...

AUF granted Ph. D. in Journalism Honoris Causa to Emilio C. Yap III on May 1 for his being a media executive for several years at the second oldest newspaper in the Philippines -- the Manila Bulletin which was founded in 1900. The faculty and staff from AUF who witnessed the conferment ceremony are also at the photo.

Manny Pacquiao Goes Back Home

Photo by REUTERS Manny Pacquiao , the world’s best pound-por-pound boxer, and now the most famous Filipino, has gone back home yesterday after winning in his latest bout against Ricky Hatton who was knocked down at round 2. As expected, he was on primetime broadcast news that night and on newspaper front pages the following day. With one focus, the media were able to create several stories: Manny comes home despite virus alert. Manny’s three kids awake the whole night awaiting his coming home. Manny is happy to see his kids again. Manny’s wife cries after seeing the interview with her children greeting her “Happy Mother’s Day.” Manny’s mother says Manny won’t be Manny if not for her. Manny goes to Quiapo church to thank God for his blessings. Manny donates dollars to the church. Manny likes to eat Nissin cup noodles when he travels. Manny is running for a political post in the coming 2010 election to help the poor. The news about Manny Pacquiao running for political post ...

What if we all live in a simulation?

Online games are very popular. Who would not have heard or played the SIMs or Second Life ? Or perhaps, who would have not been to the Iron Forge in the World of WarCraft or at the Arktuis Village in Shaiya ? These online games allow us to choose and design our own characters. And most of all, we are controlling these characters as the game progresses. In SIMS, we can choose the physical appearance (e.g. color of hair, eyes, skin, eye shadow, lipstick, height, clothes, etc.) and the traits (active, lazy, etc.) plus the job and interests . Here's how my SIMS character looked like. In this simulation game, we can create a pickpocket or a politician and become super rich. We may also become a person who loves to kiss a lot and have romance. Just like in real life, SIMs characters get tired, hungry, dirty, stinky, and sleepy. Most of all, they also die if not controlled properly. In online games like WoW or Shaiya, killing mobs or monsters is the name of the game. The ...

Susan's Got Talent!

Millions of people have been talking about Susan Boyle-- an ordinary 47-year-old virgin who caught the attention of the judges and the crowd at Britain's Got Talent. Absolutely, Susan's got talent. But what's more amazing is not her singing prowess but the discrimination that the Brit showed before Susan sang "I dreamed a dream." It also showed how ageist Simon Cowell is for reacting negatively when Susan said she's 47 years old. The faces of the audience, and the way they looked at each other as they raised their eyebrows showed nothing but discrimination. Susan Boyle has shown to the whole world how the Brit define talent. She has proven that talent does not come only from young and good-looking people.

Ted Failon lost his wife and his right to privacy

Rina Jimenez-David is right -- that CELEBRITIES HAVE RIGHTS, TOO . I've been following the news about what happened to Ted Failon since the day his wife was reported to have taken her own life -- a news that was given different angles by the police as reported by the media. The media would obviously do everything to report every detail of the story because this news has many news elements. Prominence is number one. Ted Failon has been a famous Filipino broadcaster who frequently scrutinizes the "ways of the police." It is with no surprise that the media would not leave any detail unreported because the police surely don't want to leave any detail unreported. Oo nga naman, it's the police's chance to get back to a broadcaster hitting them on air. Aside from prominence, other elements that make Trina's death newsworthy include conflict (allegedly, Ted and Trina had a fight about something that led to her death), crime (obviously, the media are rep...

Sampung taong pagtuturo: Dapat bang ikatuwa?

Baguio Photo Diaries

These photos were taken by Kevin (Kim, Dong-wook) when we were in Baguio City. We went to UP Baguio (my alma mater), Mines View Park, Burnham Park, Convention Center and of course at SM. I really had nice time with Charles and Kevin on April 2. SM Baguio looks so nice here... It's a grand mall in the mountain province :-) I didn't know Charles took this photo. We were at Mines View Park here. Kevin is on the background looking at the camera :-) This is OBLE's rear view -- ha-ha-ha! Kevin and Charles wore the native costume of the Igorot for picture taking. They paid P10.00 each for wearing such. (lol) I was looking at the view at Mines View Park. Another candid photo? OBLE in another angle :-) A shot of one of the tambayans in UP Baguio. This is a shot of the official publication of UP Baguio -- (I forgot the name) lol A painting by a Fine Arts student at UP Baguio.

My SHAIYA battle for a week

A duo with -kamikaze- MMORPG. Online games. Virtual world. SHAIYA. The past holy week signaled the beginning and end of my battle in the virtual world. I started playing an MMORPG for a week -- trying to level up my character named SexySteffi in an online game known to players as SHAIYA . It wasn't as sophisticated as Wow but most things are basically the same. The best parts would be killing monsters to level up and killing darkies to get higher ranks. Another good thing about online games like SHAIYA is the opportunity to talk to people or gamers from different parts of the world. I've met gamers from Columbia, Chile, Texas, Australia, Canada, etc. Gamers really come from different walks of life. Some are young, some old, some married, some single, some just fooling around, some serious about leveling up. As a priest, SexySteffi is in demand in the game :-) Some players would always invite her to a party so that they could conquer the monsters without getting killed a...
