Ano iyon? Ang KAHIT

CAS has a new dean

Dr. Carmela Dizon (Ma'am Malay) is the newly-appointed DEAN of the CAS effective May 2007. This must be GOOD NEWS for all of us. I know Ma'am Malay is such a very organized person and I believe she's one of the smartest people here in AUF and on top of all these, she owns one of the prettiest faces in the college. :-) Bihira dito ang katulad niya...

SAD STORIES

I learned last week that a graduating BS Biology student here in AUF died a couple of weeks prior to end of sem. The student died of leukemia and according to reports, her family knew the cause of death only when she already died. Had it was diagnosed earlier, perhaps, she could still attend the graduation ceremony on Friday (April 27). I heard that her parents are coming on Friday to receive their daughter's diploma. This is such a sad story for the parents. Even if the parents do not know me and even if I've never known the student, I feel for them. Thru this blog, I'd like to express my condolences to the family. ************************************************************************************ Another sad story: How can the suspects kill such a selfless person like Julia Campbell? I just read her blog and I found out that she did nothing but help poor Filipinos. It's so sad to think that a person like her will be betrayed by Filipinos. She was helping Filipinos, a

My thoughts in random

Just thinking: I just did student blog hopping this morning. Only three of my students are still blogging till now. I think the end of sem reveals who the real writers are in my previous class. There are three who are still blogging till now: Mariane, Melford and Myk. (Wow, three M's) *************************** I'm busy with a different project this week. I am working on original tongue twisters for an educational book to be published and distributed by June. I'm lucky because my mom, who is now so busy with a lot of writing projects gave me some of the projects she could no longer handle. After this, I am doing another one. I think writing for the mass is a noble part-time job although it doesn't pay well. Okay lang, anyway, I have a full-time job. *************************** Speaking of jobs, I'm busy with another thing. I thought of applying as a part-time writer for an online company. I sent my registration form and I have to take the test and submit by tomorro

Remember?

It's nice to know that I have non-Mass Comm students who still remember me even after they have graduated. I received an e-mail from a former student who's now in LA, California with her husband. She said her husband was also my former student, but I honestly don't remember. Anyway, nakakatuwa dahil may mga estudyanteng hindi nakakalimot. Here's her first e-mail to me: Hi Maam!!! Its Marianne Lapid, your english student at marketing before. How are you? I hope you still remember. Take Care!!! Marianne

Is this not ironic?

Another sem had just ended. Another student had thought I was stupid. She thought I didn't read student essays that I asked them to submit. She thought I didn't know how to detect plagiarized papers. She didn't remember what I taught them in our Electronic Newsroom 2 class. Imagine this: We discussed about COPYRIGHT LAW, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY and FAIR USE. I taught them why WE SHOULD NOT STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS. But at the end of the sem, she submitted three plagiarized papers to me: a plagiarized editorial, a plagiarized column, and a plagiarized feature. That was the biggest insult I've ever had in my entire stay at AUF. So I gave her the biggest lesson she could ever have learned in this school. She lost her scholarship. I texted her and asked her to see me in my office. And so she did. I showed her the three papers she submitted. I showed her my comments on her papers. I gave her the exact website addresses where she got the three papers. She had no idea how

An interesting painting

My friend, Cathy, sent these photos to me. Her brother painted her. The original picture shows Cathy studying or "pretending to study," as Cathy said thru e-mail :-) I think Cathy and her brother are perfect combination: Cathy is an excellent writer, and her brother is a talented artist. :-) Here's a part of her e-mail to me: My brother just turned 28 last Wednesday (he's two years my junior). I call him the "good-looking one in the family." He is very talented (he made me my first bookshelf when he was but 12) – It's our dream to publish an illustrated book together. I just thought it's something cool to share – it's nice because I didn't ask him for it, and he's never painted me before :-) I wish, though, that he chose another picture, not of me studying haha

I just tried

Yesterday morning, I tried applying for a job thru www.jobstreet.com . I wasn't really in search of a full-time job since I am employed at the moment. But I just tried. I haven't tried applying thru jobstreet and I just thought of trying it out. In fact, I wasn't so serious when I answered the essay part. I didn't edit my answer -- which is unlikely of me. I never submit unedited work, unless I'm not really serious. I even told myself while I was answering the essay that it's good to exercise my brain cells that morning (that was around 8 a.m.) before I start with my usual work. Then, at around 7 p.m., I was surprised when I got a text message inviting me for a job interview. I thought it came from a crank texter so I ignored it. Then the following morning, I realized I applied for a job the day before and the text message I got was from that company. But I knew I was just trying it out. The schedule for interview is today at 3p.m. I didn't s
