The Desperate Housewives: How Desperate Are They?

Are the housewives in the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES series really desperate?

Desperate Housewives Season 6 shows the lives of 6 housewives who all have strengths to keep them going, weaknesses to overcome, and secrets, lots of secrets, to reveal.

Susan Delfino, Mike's wife, has a daughter who was a victim of a violent attack. Susan wants to find out who did it. She suspects that Danny, Angie's teenage son, is the perpetrator but no evidence would point at him. What's more alarming is not that Julie, Susan's daughter, was attacked but that she is doing a lot of things that Susan has no idea about. In one episode, Susan read Julie's diary and commented that Julie seems to be a stranger because she (Susan) has no idea what's going on in her own daughter's life.

Lynette Scavo is pregnant (twin) in this episode. The problem is that she just got promoted. She accepted the promotion and decided not to reveal her secret -- that she's pregnant. She is thinking that if she tells her boss that she's pregnant, she might not get that promotion at all. Or since she already accepted the promotion, her boss might fire her if he found out about it.

Bree Hodge is having an illicit affair. She's married to a guy who adores her but she seems to have no feelings for him anymore. She's having trysts with her friend's ex-husband. In one episode, a staff of the hotel where she meets with Karl, gave her "suspicious" looks and sarcastic comment when she knew that the one with her at the hotel room is not her husband. Of course, as guilty as she is, Bree confronted the hotel staff and talked to her about her "escapades."

Gabrielle Solis is married to Carlos. His niece, Anna, lives with them. Anna falls in love with Gab's ex-boyfriend. That's where the problem lies. But Gab finally decided to forget about her feelings for that guy so she talked it out with Anna who saw the guy kissing Gab in a restaurant.

Katherine Mayfair is Mike's ex-wife. He left Katherine and marry Susan. Katherine seems to be the most frustrated of all the housewives -- she wants Mike back but Mike doesn't give any clue that he intends to go back to Katherine. The best Katherine can do is to "peek" at Mike and Susan's house. In one episode, Susan accidentally shot Katherine whom Susan thought was a burglar trying to get inside their house. Susan didn't know she was peeking on Mike.

Angie Bolen is the mother of Danny, the teenage guy suspected of attacking Julie, Susan's daughter. Danny is innocent here. But Danny is the one who knows the big secret that Julie is trying to keep from everyone. The secret? Julie is having an affair with Danny's father, Nick. In one episode, Nick knew that Danny knows the secret he has been keeping from him and his mother. Danny threatened Nick that he would tell his mom about the affair but he ended up not confessing at all.

My comments:

This is such an interesting TV series though obviously, this is culture-based. Many of the scenarios in the series can't be applied to Filipino culture. I guess, Filipino wives are still more conservative, or should I say, "less desperate" than the kinds of housewives in this series.

I guess the most desperate of them all is Katherine who longs for someone who doesn't even bother to think about her. And I pity Lynette for having to lie to her boss just to get that promotion. Well, a promotion is a promotion and being pregnant doesn't make a woman less deserving of the promotion so Lynette should not be wary about telling her boss the truth. After all, she's pregnant with her husband, not with someone else's - ha ha.

Speaking of someone else, I can't imagine a friend having sex with her friend's ex-husband. In one episode, Susan told Bree that the worst thing that a friend could do is to have an affair with her friend's ex. Well, Susan was not aware of the affair Bree has with his ex. I wonder how she would react had she known this.

Bree is also a desperate one. Really. She's having an affair with a guy who dates other women when she's not around. Not to mention, Bree is married, and her husband loves her so much. Of course, Bree has reasons for not being loyal to her husband anymore. But she lets herself be trapped in the hands of the wrong man --

And then I remember Anna seeing her stepmom kissing the guy she fell in love with. And what could be more pathetic than knowing that Julie, the teenage daughter of Susan, is having a secret affair, not with the teenage son of the neighbor, but with his dad?

Sometimes, the way things turn out in this series is unimaginable.

I never thought Julie was having an affair with Nick, Danny's dad.

I never realized being pregnant is such a big deal in getting or not getting a promotion.

I never imagined that in one neighorhood, there are lots of stories to tell, and lots and lots of secrets to reveal.

The narrator of the TV series is right: IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE AND WHO YOUR ENEMIES ARE. It's because everyone in the neighborhood loves to judge their neighbors, forgetting about judging themselves before they see others.

Levels Earned, Lessons Learned in SHAIYA

The holy week was not really holy for me. This was time of the year when I played hard. Really played hard, as in trying to make the toon level every time I logged in . And to help my toon level up, even my husband and my daughter would play with her. This year, my toon is DanieGanda. Danie, for the record, is my daughter's nick name. But I thought of adding the word "Ganda," which is a tagalog term for Beauty. DanieGanda is a human priest in the normal mode. As the rule in Shaiya, a player won't be able to create a character in the hard mode [here, toons are stronger] without first reaching level 40 in the normal mode, which is a level lower than HM. When DanieGanda started, she was power leveled by king-kruller, whom DanieGanda met while my daughter was playing the toon. King_kruller was als o Danie's first friend in Shaiya. At the moment, he's already level 58, UM. The experience was good for Danie was able to meet players from different walks o

Management Lessons from GUNG HO

'I must recognize that man achieves the highest degree of efficiency when he plays. If someone says he works out of loyalty to the company, he is a damned liar.' ----Soichiro Honda Founder-millionaire Honda Motor Co., Ltd. When a company fails, who should take the blame? When the workers complain, who should do some reflections, the management or the workers themselves? Hunt Stevenson, in the movie GUNG HO (means to WORK TOGETHER) , needed to do some reflections before it was too late. His failure to do some actions would result in closure of Assan Motors, thereby leaving hundreds of American laborers unemployed. According to Robert Heller, the author of the article EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT: TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, "How the boss behaves has a profound effect on how other managers perform - and thus on the performance of the entire outfit. That's a self-evident truth, acknowledged by most people. But few bosses acknowledge the corollary: that inferior performance is partl

An Open Letter to my Daughter as She Goes Off to College

Dear Stef, I know you’re excited to go to college, meet new friends, and embrace a more fast-paced life in Manila. I’m also excited for you! I know that the physical distance between us will only make you become stronger and more prepared to face the real world once you’ve finished college. I want you to be fully equipped and well-prepared when that time comes. I’m confident you won’t have problems being on your own. As you know, I’ve been there – was then studying in Manila, away from my parent, since I was in high school, kaya pagdating ng college sa Baguio, halos end of semester na lang ako umuuwi. At least ngayon, meron nang FB, Twitter, Skype and ‘unli text and call’, so keeping in touch is no longer an issue. Pero siyempre, iba pa rin kapag we don’t see you every day para kumustahin ang araw mo. . . Well, malapit lang naman ang Manila from Angeles, and madali ka lang puntahan, or madali ka lang makauwi, but it’s still very different from what I’ve been used to. Ngayon, without y
