When I arrived in class this morning, my classmates and my professor were talking about election which is going to happen this Monday. It made me think why I never vote. Then, here's my professor telling the class that voting now is just a matter of "choosing the lesser evil." This implies that the choices are all evil. This is the primary reason why I never vote -- never and never planned to. I don't want to "choose between evils."
For me, voting is just a waste of time. I am not going out on election day to write any candidate's name on a ballot. Experience tells me that whoever gets elected, our lives would still depend on us. No matter how good the government is, if the Filipinos would not work hard, life would be miserable. The same way, no matter how hard the Filipinos work, if the government makes poor economic and political decisions, then life in the Philippines would remain pathetic.
Also, no matter how educated or how uneducated the politicians and lawmakers are, they are bound to give in to serving their own interests first. Worse, they cater only to the interest of those who financed their campaign. So tell me, what's the point of trusting selfish candidates?
I won't buy the idea that political candidates are running for government positions in order to serve the public. This is stupid. Spending hundreds of millions for ads in order to get a job that pays 35 thousand pesos? Who would believe that?
Needless to say, I am skeptic of all the political candidates. And I will never waste my violet ink for them. Let's make this more specific. I couldn't imagine myself voting for mayor the son of the incumbent mayor of the city where I live. I've been living here for quite some time and I never felt any security, nor any satisfaction. All I see are these: poor waste management (compared with the waste management in Valenzuela where I lived for four years), skyrocketing prices of some goods and services (especially the tricycle fare that reaches the heaven -- minimum is P20 and for a short distance, you'll be charged P50!), dirty roads, prevalent prostitution (some even say they see the mayor bar-hopping!), a lot of vagrants, a lot of thieves and snatchers even during the day, the continued operation of jueteng, a lot of street kids sniffing rugby, jeepney drivers delaying the trip, etc.
All I can say is SORRY TO THE RIGHT I NEVER EXERCISE. By the way, no one in our family votes -- not my mom nor my sister, nor my brothers. None of us trusts the system and the politics in the Philippines. Don't blame us. Just look around and you'll understand why.
