A sign of ageing (for teachers)

Hey, this morning was unforgettable ... I went to a high school near AUF for a Marketing activity. I went there to support and watch the presentation of my second year Mass Comm students. Of course, the presentation was good and the students weren't bored (thank God!) What made me really amazed and happy this morning was when, after the presentation, four high school students approached me to ask if I remember them. I have to admit I didn't have any idea who they were. I tried to recall if I have seen them before but my memory couldn't retrieve any incident that will make me say they are familiar. Then, when I gave up trying to make a recall, they introduced themselves and the names were all familiar! They were my former students at Brightwoods School, the first school where I've served for a year as grade three (3) teacher. The last time I saw them was when they were only nine years old. I was their class adviser then. Maliliit pa sila. Now, they're graduating fr...

Hello to all the ARANETANS batch 1994!

Check out SAMASKOM blog

I've created SAMASKOM blog. Check it out at www.samaskom.blogspot.com . . That is where I plan to post photos and information on the activities of AB Mass Communication students at ANGELES UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION (Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines). SAMASKOM means Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Komunikasyon . It is the name of the official organization of ABMC students at AUF.

It feels good to hear from my good old friends...

After so many days and nights, I finally got the chance to hear from my high school pals. I felt excited today when I received e-mails from Kuya Shine, Jayme, Agnes and Aries. Despite everyone's busy schedules, the ARANETANS still find time to get in touch. By the way, the group is called the ARANETANS because we're all from ARANETA UNIVERSITY EXTENSION. (Wala na yata yun ngayon) I'm posting their pix next time.

In the name of the FUTURE

(Here's an essay I've written a couple of years ago) On that sunny morning, everybody at the faculty room was busy computing for the grades, writing them down in students’ class cards and accomplishing grade sheets. Some teachers were in front of the computer, some were computing manually using calculators and the others were almost finished with the grades. It wasn’t surprising to see the teachers doing all these; after all, this is the usual thing that happens on the day before the deadline of submission of students’ grades. Another semester has ended. It is again time for the teachers to submit to the respective colleges concerned the grades of the students who struggled the whole semester just to be promoted to the next level. The following day was also a sunny day. But the teachers were no longer busy. Finally, they had submitted the grades. They could say “Mission accomplished.” So on that particular day, most teachers were just relaxing – reading their favorite books, se...

A movie that can touch your heart

My thoughts about the BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN : Even a forbidden relationship can stand the test of time. Despite having their own families, Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), still found a different kind of happiness on each other's arms. The movie actually reminded me of a person I never had a chance to know well. I was just fortunate to have told him how I felt that time before he left. I remembered this person when I saw the scene showing Ennis Del Mar holding Jack's jacket so tight that he cried because he knew Jack won't be coming back. It was only when Jack died that Ennis realized how special he was for Jack. pix fr. www.imdb.com .

I'm republishing an article inspired by MITCH ALBOM's novels and a sad incident -- this was published on my first blog on Nov. 7, 2005

A MIXTURE OF FACT & FICTION IN REAL LIFE The last two books I have read: TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN (both were written by Mitch Albom) The latest news I have heard: SIR WILSON DG SOLIS PASSED AWAY AT 10:30 A.M. TODAY --November 2, 2005 Sir Wilson was my professor in graduate school and my thesis adviser. He was the only person in AUF who sincerely trusted me and my abilities as a graduate student. He was the one who, to my surprise, encouraged me to present my thesis in a regional research congress in Bulacan. He kept telling me I can handle all problems that come along. He was the one who had made me realize that LIFE AIN'T FAIR . TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE highlighted a teacher-student relationship outside the four-cornered classroom. The lessons were about the significant concepts in life: ageing, love, work, community, family, and death . Each page of this book is worth treasuring because it contains valuable insights on what is important and what is...

THOUGHTS TO LINGER ON

I feel really refreshed now that I started attending a Philosophy class with Sir Archie. I just miss being a student. It's too tiring to teach and be the center of attention for five straight months (one sem). At least now, I am more relaxed and I am honestly enjoying being a student. I love the feeling of receiving handouts from the teacher, instead of I doing the handouts for my students. Actually, if you have just read my post yesterday, you'll have a clue of how I felt about my being a teacher right now. It's just too tiring to feed information and to pretend you're fine even if you're not. You see, teachers are show-persons. As teachers, we ought not show our students how we feel at the moment because it might affect the way they receive knowledge or information from us. Even if a teacher isn't in the mood for a discussion, kailangan ipakitang everything is fine. I sometimes hate that feeling. I never want to pretend to be someone else. Mahirap . But I do ...

DON'T READ THIS PART

Something made me realize that: 1. I should not spend so much time studying and reviewing the lessons for my classes. Sometimes, I ask myself, "Why do I have to stay awake till 3 in the morning studying or just reviewing all the lessons for my class?" I read, I absorb the lessons, I think of strategy so as not to make the discussion boring and monotonous, I prepare PowerPoint presentation, I review lessons and update my materials. All these, in six different classes. Unfortunately, after spending hours preparing for my classes, most or some of my students would just choose to stare at me blankly or drag themselves literally just to cooperate with me. And then, at the end of the semester, only few students will remember to even say "Hi" when you meet them somewhere. Worse, some students don't even care to do their assignments. They don't even read their assignments. All they want to do is to download information from the Internet and submit plagiarized papers...

WE'LL MEET AGAIN is a suspense novel that focuses on Molly Lasch's story. Molly was convicted for murdering her own husband, Dr. Gary Lasch, who was found dead in his home. After spending five and a half years of sleepless nights behind the bars, Molly was finally given a parole. Molly, unlike everybody else, still believes she didn't really kill her own husband. She thought there was someone else in the house when her husband died. But she was sent to jail because the testimonies of the "witnesses" were strong, especially that of Mrs. Edna Barry, their housekeeper. The story unfolds as Fran Simmons, a TV reporter, decided to accept Molly's offer to further investigate the death of Dr. Lasch. Molly gave Fran all the names of the people who, in one way or another, had relationship, either business or personal, to Dr. Lasch. NOw, Fran is about to discover a lot of things, including the fate of her own dad who killed himself on Fran's graduation day. As she u...

What does it take to be a brother? This is a very subjective question. There can be as many answers as there are people who have brothers. I have always wondered, “Does my brother know his mission and his role on this planet?” He doesn’t seem to be aware of it. He was expected to be a model to all of us, who are younger than he is. As the eldest child of my parents, he should have shown us how to patiently spend hours studying lessons, writing school papers, and reviewing for exams; As the eldest, he should have taught us the difference between needs and wants; As the eldest, he should have encouraged us to continue studying and preparing for our future; As the eldest, he should have understood our limitations, and weaknesses; As the eldest, he should have been at our youngest sister’s wedding; As the eldest, he should unite our family despite all trials and problems; As the eldest, he should have given full assistance to our mom who once needed his help; As the eldest, he should ...
