Does projection matter more than technicalities in a dance competition?

A stupid dance contest. That is what I think about SHALL WE DANCE(?). I have watched several episodes of this dance contest on local channel. And I realized that the host is irritating me. She shouldn't be a host for a dance competition. She speaks as if she lost all her energy practicing for her opening number. She doesn't even dance well. I think she has to attend a series of workshops for hosting and interviewing contestants and most of all, she has to develop her speech. She's the only one I heard who says "GIV IT AP." (Give it up!) She lacks proper blending in her English pronunciation and she sounds so scripted and so weak as a host.

Unfortunately, she's not the only reason that makes me so irritated with the show. There is another thing that I noticed. The judges are really biased. I couldn't imagine how, on last night's episode, Melanie Marquez and her partner got a perfect score of 10! I am not a good dancer -- I don't really dance. But it doesn't mean I have no idea what good dancing and good choreography are all about.

It was obvious last night that the judges were biased in favor of Melanie Marquez. To me, as a viewer and observer, Melanie Marquez was nothing but a contestant who is so kulang sa pansin. She doesn't really dance well. All she could do was to project, project, and project. She has overwhelming self-confidence which made the judges blind, if not biased. Grabe.
The judges told the other contestants how their performances as partners affect their score. Para daw walang chemistry yung ibang contestant kaya di type ng judges. Yung iba naman, para daw walang kapartner pag sumayaw. Kailangan daw alalayan ng isa yung hindi gaanong comfortable with the steps. Pero bakit naman ganun din ang comment kina Melanie M. and her partner pero perfect ten and score na binigay ng isang judge? That only means that the judge was contradicting herself. All the judges agreed that Melanie's self-confidence and stage presence were too strong that it made her partner almost non-existent. Hindi na raw nila napansin yung kapartner ni Melanie dahil sa sobrang projection. That only means they were not effective as partners. So why were they given the highest score?
I can only think of one answer to that. The judges really have the tendency to be biased because they have no clear set of rubrics or criteria. It's just similar to checking essays. As a Writing teacher, I can give any score to my students from zero to 100 whether the paper deserves the score or not. It can happen if I am not using any set of criteria like 50% for content, 30% for organization and 20% for mechanics. If I like the student, maybe I could give him/her 97% and if there is something about the paper that pleases me personally, then, 95% will do. Or, if the student has a poor handwriting although the essay is substantial and organized, then 75% would be enough. That is the danger of not having clear-cut criteria.
I think SHALL WE DANCE (?) should make use of criteria to guide the judges. Hindi pwedeng one judge would say, "You're my Idol Melanie, so I give you 10 out of 10!" EXCUSE ME. THE JUDGES OUGHT TO BE PROFESSIONAL AND NOT EMOTIONAL. Sana alam ni Regine Tolentino yan.
Period.

I think Melanie Marquez did the audience happy.Isa ako sa Fan ng Shall we Dance and fan talaga ako ni Ms. Melanie, I like the way she project lalo na sa song na "don't cry for me argentina". She and her partner did a good dance that's why the one judge gave them a perfect score, we can't blame Ms. Melanie why she always making projection kapag sumasayaw, she is a Super Model, that's why she always making projection sa dance floor. I'm happy that Ms. Melanie M. ay naging part ng Shall we dance.

Levels Earned, Lessons Learned in SHAIYA

The holy week was not really holy for me. This was time of the year when I played hard. Really played hard, as in trying to make the toon level every time I logged in . And to help my toon level up, even my husband and my daughter would play with her. This year, my toon is DanieGanda. Danie, for the record, is my daughter's nick name. But I thought of adding the word "Ganda," which is a tagalog term for Beauty. DanieGanda is a human priest in the normal mode. As the rule in Shaiya, a player won't be able to create a character in the hard mode [here, toons are stronger] without first reaching level 40 in the normal mode, which is a level lower than HM. When DanieGanda started, she was power leveled by king-kruller, whom DanieGanda met while my daughter was playing the toon. King_kruller was als o Danie's first friend in Shaiya. At the moment, he's already level 58, UM. The experience was good for Danie was able to meet players from different walks o

Management Lessons from GUNG HO

'I must recognize that man achieves the highest degree of efficiency when he plays. If someone says he works out of loyalty to the company, he is a damned liar.' ----Soichiro Honda Founder-millionaire Honda Motor Co., Ltd. When a company fails, who should take the blame? When the workers complain, who should do some reflections, the management or the workers themselves? Hunt Stevenson, in the movie GUNG HO (means to WORK TOGETHER) , needed to do some reflections before it was too late. His failure to do some actions would result in closure of Assan Motors, thereby leaving hundreds of American laborers unemployed. According to Robert Heller, the author of the article EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT: TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, "How the boss behaves has a profound effect on how other managers perform - and thus on the performance of the entire outfit. That's a self-evident truth, acknowledged by most people. But few bosses acknowledge the corollary: that inferior performance is partl

An Open Letter to my Daughter as She Goes Off to College

Dear Stef, I know you’re excited to go to college, meet new friends, and embrace a more fast-paced life in Manila. I’m also excited for you! I know that the physical distance between us will only make you become stronger and more prepared to face the real world once you’ve finished college. I want you to be fully equipped and well-prepared when that time comes. I’m confident you won’t have problems being on your own. As you know, I’ve been there – was then studying in Manila, away from my parent, since I was in high school, kaya pagdating ng college sa Baguio, halos end of semester na lang ako umuuwi. At least ngayon, meron nang FB, Twitter, Skype and ‘unli text and call’, so keeping in touch is no longer an issue. Pero siyempre, iba pa rin kapag we don’t see you every day para kumustahin ang araw mo. . . Well, malapit lang naman ang Manila from Angeles, and madali ka lang puntahan, or madali ka lang makauwi, but it’s still very different from what I’ve been used to. Ngayon, without y
